چکیده

Fraction and decimal arithmetic are crucial for later mathematics achievement and for ability to succeed in many professions. Unfortunately, these capabilities pose large difficulties formany children and adults, and students’ proficiency in them has shown little sign of improvement over the past three decades. To summarize what is known about fraction and decimal arithmetic and to stimulate greater amounts of research in the area, we devoted this review to analyzing why learning fraction and decimal arithmetic is so difficult. We identify and discuss two types of difficulties: (1) inherent difficulties of fraction and decimal arithmetic and (2) culturally contingent difficulties that could be reduced by improved instruction and prior knowledge of learners. We conclude the review by discussing commonalities among three interventions that have helped children overcome the challenges of mastering fraction and decimal

Decimal Division Using the Newton–Raphson Method and Radix-1000 Arithmetic

Computer arithmetic is predominantly performed using binary arithmetic because the hardware implementations of the operations are simpler than those for decimal computation. However, many decimal fractions cannot be represented exactly as binary fractions with a finite number of bits. The value 0.1, for example, can only be represented as an infinitely recurring binary number. If a binary appro...

A Computational Model of Fraction Arithmetic (in press, Psychological Review)

Many children fail to master fraction arithmetic even after years of instruction, a failure that hinders their learning of more advanced mathematics as well as their occupational success. To test hypotheses about why children have so many difficulties in this area, we created a computational model of fraction arithmetic learning and presented it with the problems from a widely used textbook ser...

A systematic investigation of the link between rational number processing and algebra ability.

Recent research suggests that fraction understanding is predictive of algebra ability; however, the relative contributions of various aspects of rational number knowledge are unclear. Furthermore, whether this relationship is notation-dependent or rather relies upon a general understanding of rational numbers (independent of notation) is an open question. In this study, college students complet...

Uncovering Gender and Problem Difficulty Effects in Learning with an Educational Game

A prior study showed that middle school students who used the educational game Decimal Point achieved significantly higher gain scores on immediate and delayed posttests of decimal understanding than students who learned with a more conventional computer-based learning tool. This paper reports on new analyses of the data from that study, providing new insights into the benefits of the game. Fir...
